In order to monitor the volcanic aerosol layer at stratospheric altitudes on a regular basis, a Nd:YAG laser LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) has been developed at PRL using a Quantel YAG laser. The state-of -the art lidar system monitored the volcanic layer formed after the Mount Pinatubo eruption with high altitude resolution and precision.
The lidar lab is presently located at Mount Abu at a height of about 1.7 km above msl and used for obtaining temperature profile up to mesospheric altitudes
